11/20/13 ASHLAND, Ohio – An Ashland University professor of French has received a grant that will allow the University to host a French film festival on campus in January and February of next year.
Dr. Richard Gray, assistant professor of French, said the University has received a grant from the French American Cultural Exchange. The exchange chooses approximately 25 universities in both the fall and spring semesters to receive grants that serve to pay the screening costs associated with presenting a film in a public setting.
“We are excited because Ashland University is the only university in the state of Ohio to have received the grant for spring 2014,” Gray said. “This grant will allow AU to show five French films in January and February as part of the ‘Tournées Festival.’”
Gray said the festival will present a variety of films from the French-speaking world covering a range of film genres including dramas, an animated feature and a documentary. All films will be shown in the Student Center Auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. The films are:
Le Bonheur d'Elza/Elza (2011) – Jan. 22, 2014
Amour/Amour (2012) – Jan. 28, 2014
De rouille et d'os/Rust and Bone (2012) – Jan. 30, 2014
Le Chat du rabbin/The Rabbi’s Cat (2011) – Feb. 4, 2014
Entre les bras/Step Up to the Plate (2012) – Feb. 18, 2014
“In addition to adding the films to complement the courses in French language and literature that are being taught next semester, the film festival also will constitute an essential component of the ENG332 (Global Cinemas) - French Cinema course that I am teaching,” Gray said.
The Tournées Festival, a program of French American Cultural Exchange (FACE) in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, is made possible with the support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S. and the Centre National de la Cinématographie et de l’Image Animée.
