Dr. Richard Gray, incoming assistant professor of French, presented a paper, "The Monomyth: Re-Reading Camara Laye's L'Enfant noir as the Quest of the Hero," at the Kentucky Foreign Language Conference in Lexington, Kentucky, on April 19. The paper examined Laye's semi-autobiographical Francophone novel L'Enfant noir through the framework of Joseph Campbell's myth of the hero motif in which the hero receives a "Call to adventure," and then undergoes a series of trials before ultimately reintegrating within his original community.
